Hello – welcome to the auction for this fantastic bit of Cider History… Cant be many of these left around!
There is no name plate on this machine, but I’m reliably informed that this is a very old Workman and Sons Apple Scratter – I’ve found images of a restored one at shows and can confirm it’s build is very similar, this must have been a top spec model as it has spring relief on the stones and has a cam operated feed hammer to help work the apples down into the machine which I believe is quite a rare thing!
It has obviously seen better days and although working (I’m 100% sure it would smash up and squash apples), it definitely needs some sympathetic restoration, the metalwork and the stones are in amazingly good condition and ideally it wants to be carefully dismantled and the boarding replaced with nice aged wood.
It wouldn’t have been on the metal frame, and whoever put it on the frame should have gone to spec savers as they cut one leg a bit short so it really needs lifting off and squaring up, saying that it all turns over nicely, and I’ve not started to do anything with it as it’s too good to start and not complete properly.
There is a little Villiers engine on the frame which I think has come from a bale elevator, the engine seems to have some compression but is a non runner, but handy to have as it has a nice little belt pully gearbox attached which could be used on an existing engine to drive this or any other belt drive machine.
