Vintage Shepherds Hut
Kept on the same Wiltshire downland farm for six generations, and lived in by the shepherd Freddie Smith for the lambing seasons in the early 1900s. Used as a chicken shed for about the last 20 years. (Since initially writing this we have been told that it may have originally been part of a Hosier milking bale (containing machinery), hence the substantial metal chassis and three wheels. Hosier’s farm is a neighbouring farm. It may subsequently have been converted to a shepherd’s hut for Freddie Smith).
Substantial metal chassis with cast iron wheels, wooden body, curved corrugated iron roof. Metal floor, part solid, part mesh. Two main wheels and a single front wheel which swivels. Single “stable” door. Divided internally (roughly half way) to provide a chicken area with 2 perches, pop hole and nest box, and a people / feed storage area which has access to the next box without going in with the chickens. Also a small “cage” built in (with it’s own external and internal doors) for separating out broody chickens.
One wheel is cracked and front “axle” needs repair but it can be towed a very short distance (e.g. onto a low loader).
Ready to use as a chicken shed but would need substantial restoration (probably a new “top” from the chassis up) if you wanted to make it habitable.
